Real Talk About Intentional Guidance
As a group, school counselors are in crisis. The ILI theme "Take a Chance...Make a Change" must become our battle cry. We secretly ask ourselves: I have so many students, how can I know all of them? Why can't someone else fax this stuff? Why do the teachers think I'm the enemy? How can we work as a team? How can I help my boss understand the value I bring to the team? Are my students really different because I'm their counselor? Participants will briefly identify challenges; then they will be asked to take a chance by identifying one task they can change this year. Participants will create a SMART goal, identify systemic issues and behaviors that impede change. Each participant will be invited to continue collaboration with attendees throughout the 2016-17 school year.

To Makerspace and Beyond: One School's Journey
At Nance Elementary, we began with the task of creating a Makerspace. This space needed a combination of Technology and STEM. Through OETT, K20, and district support, we were able to establish such a space. In this presentation, participants will hear how to begin a Makerspace. They will get detailed information on what items we would begin with if helping a school create their own space.
As our vision began to grow, our site started having Wednesday Tech training. Participants will see how we began using the tech integration specialists and classroom teacher to co-teach tech lessons and experiences.
The presenters will also share ways that we began taking STEM into other areas of the school and outside of the school site. Participants will learn how we shared many of these experiences with parents through the SeeSaw app.
Participants will leave with a list of ways that could greatly influence the STEM culture of their own site. The ideas will be achievable goals that could happen in small parts.

Resources Available for Undocumented Students
We will discuss higher education and financial aid options for students that come from mixed-status families, highlight organizations to keep them connected, an overview of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and traveling, and reminding teachers that a social security number is not required to attend college.
We have heard over and over how undocumented students have been told by teachers or counselors that they will not be allowed to attend college if they lack a valid social security number. In the past few years, there has been a shift because the school personnel is becoming/staying informed about the options students have and because there are more and more undocumented students attending and graduating college. By teaching students how to advocate for themselves, i.e. knowing how and who to ask, letting them know they are not alone, and the options they have regardless of the path taken to finish school, we are creating a community were these same students return to inspire the ones that will follow.

Can You Hear Me Now? The Value of Voice
Students often spend the school day waiting to speak, being told what volume level to speak, raising their hand to speak, and being spoken to. What are you doing in your classroom to give students a voice? This presentation will be tied to the idea of Voice Levels in the classroom that we use as a guide to volume, but the twist is to allow these levels to give students an opportunity to use their voice to make communication of information and ideas more personal.
See examples of student work that involves backchannels, recorded voice, voice in digital portfolios, reflection voices, presentation voices and shared voices. Find out how allowing students to be guided with voice can give some of them the freedom to express themselves, collaborate with others, create and solve. Several tools including apps, Google and web-based platforms will be introduced and shared.
A student's work is valuable, but their voice is priceless! Can you hear them now?

Career Cafes: A Recipe for Student Success
According to recent studies, "roughly half of college students in engineering made that decision while still in high school, making this a critical time period. Teachers/counselors are individuals with whom students discuss their future plans and seek counsel. If school personnel have limited knowledge of these career options, many students may not know about or consider certain careers as viable choices."
Career exploration programs can be used as a tool to help schools develop and maintain a college planning culture. Career Cafe is a career exploration program designed to increase student awareness of different career fields and allow students to speak directly with community members about career and college planning in a small group atmosphere. Discussions will include how to engage students, volunteer recruitment and selection, scheduling, and sustainability. Information will also be presented on research and planning resources. Participants will have the opportunity ask questions about the process and beginning planning for their own program.

3D Science Learning: Integrating Dimensions
The three-dimensional (3D) structure of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S) is a brand new approach to science pedagogy, one which is dramatically different from Oklahoma's previous PASS standards. While many educators already emphasize hands-on activities in science, the degree to which OAS-S uses true inquiry-based learning in the classroom may be a novel experience for many. Genuine inquiry requires students to practice science in order to learn and connect a variety of scientific ideas. With full implementation of OAS-S this year, it is imperative that educators feel equipped with the tools and confidence to lead authentic lessons driven by students' own questions and curiosity. By engaging in a 3D learning activity and evaluating the components of the experience, participants will discover how the three dimensions of OAS-S are meant to be integrated in a lesson to build a deeper student understanding of science. Participants will also learn how to navigate the OAS-S document in order to further support the transition to 3D learning.

How Should a Student-centered Classroom Look?
Many times when teachers attend professional development seminars they hear about an amazing lesson to include in their classroom curriculum. Upon returning to their campus they try to implement it with eagerness, but unfortunately it does not go they way they had expected. So, what happened? Where did they go wrong? What if it was not a problem with the teacher or the lesson, but with the environment? Oftentimes, the ideas, lessons, and strategies we hear about fall short of our expectations because the infrastructure within the classroom is not conducive to that type of lesson. Rarely do our students know what to do with the autonomy and unwritten expectations associated with student-centered learning experiences. In this session, we will focus on how teachers can create a classroom environment that promotes and sustains student-centered teaching and learning practices. Participants will draw from memorable learning experiences and collaborate with one another to define what student-centeredness can look like in their classrooms. We will also hear about what research says about student-centered learning and its implications for our practice as teachers. Finally, participants will be given the space to examine various classroom practices and begin thinking about them through a student-focused lens. Our hope is for participants to leave with worthwhile ideas and practical strategies that they can use to begin making their classrooms more student-centered. Will you take a chance on this idea of teaching and learning? Will you make a change in your classroom?

Mind Over Math
For our students to gain conceptual understanding of the new Math Standards, a shift in mindsets needs to take place. In this session teachers will explore the benefits of looking at math through a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset. A key element is looking at mistakes and mathematical struggles as a way to approach mathematics. Mathematically rich tasks will be used to illustrate how you can transform your classroom into a place where curiosity about math is piqued, and negative math thinking is replaced with a positive, fun message.

An #OklaEd Collaboration: Hour of Code
With technology changing every industry on the planet, computing knowledge has become part of a well-rounded skillset. But only one in every four schools teaches computer science! Good news is, we're on our way to change this. If you heard about the Hour of Code last year, you might know it made history. 100 million students have now discovered how accessible and fun computer science can be by doing just one 'Hour of Code.'
The 'Hour of Code' is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Learn more at http://HourofCode.com, try an hour yourself, or host an 'Hour of Code' event to introduce others to the world of computing!
During the week of December 5-11, 2016, schools across Oklahoma will unite to participate in the 'Hour of Code'. Tammy G. Parks, President of the Oklahoma Technology Association is organizing an #OklaEd collaboration to partner classrooms that have participated in 'Hour of Code' with classrooms that are new to this event.
Participants in this workshop will be introduced to 'Hour of Code' activities, provided with resources to participate in 'Hour of Code', and partnered with another Oklahoma classroom to connect and collaborate with during the event.
The 'Hour of Code' is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week [csedweek.org] and code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.
